NMAI/NASM Visit 8/6/05
Sweeteeface and I took the Metro down to the Mall on Saturday. We took thge Red Line to Fort Totten, which I figured would be less crowded than Gallery Place or Metro Center. We din't have to much of a problem, the only problem was figuring which door to aim the scooter at. On our way from L'Enfant Plaza to the Mall, we encountered one of DC's famous "Reality Challenged" citizens. We stopped and feighed a phone call to a friend to give him a chance to wander on down the street. We passed the Depaertment of Education, with its banners proclaming "No Child Left Behind" (aka Teach to the Test!). They had erected structures around the entrances that were supposed to look like "Little Red School Houses". Robi said they looked more like double wide privies! When we got to the National Museum of the American Indian, there was no wait to get in, and the building was quite impressive. Unfortunaetly, Cree was not one of the features tribes at this time, but, as the guides said, this is not a history museum, it's more of a cultural center. After the NMAI, we went to the Air and Space Museum. The touchable moon rock has a thick plexiglass cover over it now. You have to reach under it to touch the moon rock. Probably put there to keep someone from getting a chisel to the rock to carve off a piece. My favorite exhibit has always been Carrier Operations. The flight deck crewman used to sport a "Nimtz: Teamwork a tradition" button, but it's gone now. On the way back to the Metro, apparently they moved the L'Enfant Plaza station. (No we didn't get lost!). We switched at Gallery place this time, just to liven things up.

It was a hot day, but when we got back home and hopped (crawled!) into the hot tub, we said we'll do it again, maybe to the WWII Memorial next time. Looking forward to it!
